On the Independence of Mandarin Aspectual and Contrastive Sentence-Final ne

چکیده

This paper argues for treating the Mandarin sentence-final particle ne as ambiguous between marking contrastive topic, in the sense of Büring 2003, and marking durative aspect. This account is novel is two ways. First, it rejects the widespread view that ne never marks aspect, representing a revival of Chan’s (1980) classic aspectual analysis. Second, while topic-marking ne is known to mark contrastive topic (Lee 2003), I believe my account is the first to extend contrastive topic meaning to the sentence-final particle. The fact that aspectual ne and contrastive ne cannot co-occur is treated as the result of a haplology constraint, parallel to the more familiar haplology effects targeting the particle le.

Deriving Output Probabilities in Child Mandarin from a Dual-Optimization Grammar

We examine the patterns of optionality that are characteristic of the acquisition of two Mandarin Chinese sentence-final temporal/aspectual markers: inchoative le and progressive ne. What we observe is a productive and systematic pattern of optionality (two forms ne and le for one meaning: inchoative) and ambiguity (one form ne for two meanings: progressive and inchoative) in spontaneous produc...

Contrastive Analysis of Aspectual Oppositions in English and Persian

This article aims at contrasting aspectual oppositions in English and Persian in the context of the novel The Old Man and the Sea, and its translation by Daryabandari (1983) as the data. Unlike English, in Persian perfective and imperfective forms are morphologically marked. While the vast majority of English simple past forms are translated into Persian by past perfective forms, only less than...

Grammatical aspect and event recognition in children's online sentence comprehension.

This study investigated whether or not the temporal information encoded in aspectual morphemes can be used immediately by young children to facilitate event recognition during online sentence comprehension. We focused on the contrast between two grammatical aspectual morphemes in Mandarin Chinese, the perfective morpheme -le and the (imperfective) durative morpheme -zhe. The perfective morpheme...

Default ne in Child Mandarin Chinese

Transcripts of children acquiring Mandarin Chinese reveal errors in the morphological realization of inchoative aspect. Where an adult would use a sentence-final particle le, children will often either omit it, or substitute a different marker (ne). We analyze the overuse of ne in child Mandarin as a retreat to a default form that results from an impoverished syntactic representation. We compar...

Sentence-Final Only and the Interpretation of Focus in Mandarin Chinese1

In this paper I document the complex interactions between the Mandarin sentence-final only item éryǐ and the focus marker shì. Following work on Chinese Sentence-Final Particles (SFP), éryǐ syntactically is in the CPdomain and thus should scope above TP-level operators such as negation, and this is indeed normally the case. However, the introduction of the focus marker shì can force the sentenc...
